Inspired by the first men's wristwatches

Introducing the Vario x RZE UltraHex Trench collection, combining vintage style with modern durability. This is the first collaboration between two independent Singaporean watch brands and a celebration of local craftsmanship and creative synergy.

This collection merges Vario's elegant retro aesthetic with RZE's modern, robust engineering. The result is a distinctive model designed for discerning collectors who value both tradition and innovation.

The watch case is made of titanium, making it exceptionally lightweight and highly corrosion-resistant. The surface is treated with special UltraHex™ technology, which increases the material's hardness up to eight times compared to standard stainless steel. This makes the watch significantly more resistant to scratches and everyday wear and tear, which active users will especially appreciate.

The sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating ensures high scratch resistance and excellent readability even in direct sunlight. The bezel and dial are designed in the spirit of classic "trench" watches with prominent numerals and a clean, functional design.

Inside, a reliable automatic movement ticks. The combination of traditional looks and modern technology makes this watch an ideal choice for collectors and everyday wear.

The Vario 1918 Trench Watch line is a modern interpretation of the "trench watches" – the first wristwatches used by soldiers during World War I. They are true to the spirit of the original classics. They are robust, functional, and versatile, perfectly suited for both uniform and evening wear.

A Tribute to World War I "Trench" Watches

When World War I began in 1914, soldiers faced a new problem. In the chaos on and off the battlefield, where precise timing was crucial for communication, routines, and synchronizing attacks, reliable and accurate watches were essential. However, the pocket watches owned by officers proved impractical on the battlefield—they were awkward to handle with gloves, their glass covers broke easily, and they were unreadable at night. In conditions where a second could mean the difference between life and death, it was clear that a better solution was needed. Thus, in the muddy trenches of World War I, the wristwatch was born.

Until then, wristwatches were considered women's accessories. The military redesigned this: enlarging it, adding more durable materials, and useful features like Arabic numerals for better readability, unbreakable crystals, and luminous hands for visibility at night. By 1917, trench watches were common among officers and gradually spread to the infantry.

By the end of the war in 1918, trench watches had become a symbol of courage and bravery, paving the way for their mass popularity in the post-war era. The Vario 1918 Trench Watch series pays homage to this era and its innovations, elevating the classic design to a level unimaginable a hundred years ago:

- Double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating replaces the fragile original glass;
- Titanium case with 10ATM (100m) water resistance and reinforced wire lugs increases durability and security, unlike the soft silver used in 1910;
- Modern, non-toxic luminescence replaces the original radium, which threatened watchmakers' health and required frequent maintenance;
- A modern enamel dial, surpassing the fragile vitrified glazed surface of earlier watches;
- Precise Japanese automatic movement with hacking function and automatic winding – a luxury our ancestors could only dream of.

One of the most iconic features we have preserved are the true wire lugs. Their retro charm combines aesthetics and functionality, offering greater security than standard spring bars.

We also offer Medic versions of the watches:
The Vario 1918 Medic model pays tribute to World War I medics with a pulsometer that has been saving lives since the 1920s. The watch features the Caduceus symbol, which the US Army Medical Corps adopted as its official emblem at the time. This detail makes the Medic model a tribute not only to historical watches but also to brave medics.
