Traditional Techniques with a Modern Approach
The Awake Sơn Mài – Fragments model represents another chapter in the exploration of traditional craft techniques that the Awake brand brings to the world of modern watchmaking. The collection was created by combining the Vietnamese lacquer technique Sơn Mài with the historical Japanese method Raden, where mother-of-pearl fragments are incorporated into the lacquer surface. The result is a dial resembling a delicate mosaic of light, whose reflections and color depth change according to the light and movement of the wrist.

Unique Dial
Each dial is handmade in Hanoi and is created by gradually applying layers of natural lacquer, pigments, and mother-of-pearl fragments, which are then enclosed in several layers of transparent lacquer. This process requires a high degree of precision and patience – the production of a single dial takes approximately fifteen hours of work, and the result is a unique structure, meaning no two pieces are entirely identical.
The watch case is made of recycled 316L stainless steel and has a diameter of 39 mm, a length of 45.6 mm lug-to-lug, and a thickness of 11.8 mm including the crystal. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, while the transparent screwed case back allows a view of the mechanical movement. The case water resistance is 50 m (5 ATM).
Inside the watch operates the automatic Swiss caliber La Joux-Perret G101, which offers a frequency of 28,800 vph and a power reserve of up to 68 hours. The movement is complemented by a personalized tungsten rotor with a combination of brushed, polished, and micro-blasted surfaces, visible through the sapphire case back.
The indices and hands are equipped with Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9 in Awake's characteristic design, where the luminescent base is complemented by polished metal elements. This construction principle creates a subtle, indirect lighting effect and maintains the visual dominance of the handmade dial.
The watches are fitted with a Maison Jean Rousseau leather strap made of matte calf leather with an Alcantara lining, quick-release spring bars, and a steel pin buckle.
The Green variant works with an organic palette of shades reminiscent of light passing through forest foliage. The gradation of colors and mother-of-pearl reflections creates a calm, natural character for the dial, emphasizing the poetic concept of the entire collection. The model is produced in a limited edition of 100 pieces.
About the brand
Awake is an independent French watchmaking brand founded in 2019 by entrepreneurs and watch collectors Lilian, Thibault, and Benjamin. From the outset, it has been based on the idea that a watch is not just a tool for measuring time, but also an object that can express its owner's values and relationship with the world around us.
The brand's philosophy lies in striving to give watches a deeper meaning – to combine watchmaking technique, artistic craftsmanship, and a responsible approach to production. Awake therefore works with innovative materials, supports traditional craft techniques, and collaborates with masters from various fields around the world.
One of the brand's characteristic elements is the connection of French design, Swiss watchmaking mechanics, and traditional Vietnamese artistic craftsmanship. This combination is, for example, behind the Sơn Mài collection, which uses a historical lacquer technique used in Vietnam for centuries and brings it into the world of modern mechanical watches.
Awake also positions itself as a brand that emphasizes a responsible approach to production and materials. Since its inception, it has worked with recycled materials and strives to minimize its ecological footprint without compromising on quality or design.
The brand's name – Awake – refers to the idea of a greater awareness of the value of time and the world around us. Each model is therefore intended to tell its own story and bring not only technical precision but also emotion and distinctive character.
Thanks to this combination of contemporary design, traditional craftsmanship, and a modern approach to production, Awake has built a strong position among young independent watchmaking brands within a few years and has attracted the attention of collectors and watchmaking media worldwide.
