About the model

Working on the Bluefin model opened up a whole range of tangential ideas. One of them concerned exploration and a reliable travel companion – lightweight and robust, yet elegant and refined. The result is the 37.11 Odyssey.

Diver's watch for travelers

The Odyssey shares the pressure-balanced case construction architecture of the award-winning 37.09 Bluefin. Now, however, with a GMT movement and in pure Grade 2 titanium, which can be paired with a matching bracelet or the revolutionary MING Polymesh, to become an ultra-light travel companion. The watch head weighs less than 42.5 grams.

Three time zones

The Odyssey tracks three time zones simultaneously. The central GMT hand is independently adjustable and indicates the second time zone. The inner bidirectional rotating sapphire dial with 24 clicks (one for each world time zone) tracks the third zone. Unlike the Bluefin and Uni, this dial is bidirectional. It is operated by the crown at 4 o'clock, which remains functional underwater. The crown at 2 o'clock is screw-down and is used for winding and setting the time; an orange ring visually signals whether the crown is unscrewed.

Smoked sapphire dial and gradient luminescence

The smoked sapphire dial hints at a view of the movement beneath. The 24-hour markers on the rotating dial are luminescent and color-coded: orange for night hours, blue for day. The hour indexes on the crystal are in MING's proprietary Polar White material. New to the Odyssey is a hand set with gradient luminescent treatment, a first in MING's history.

Grade 2 Titanium and 300m Water Resistance

The brushed Grade 2 titanium case measures 38mm in diameter, 12.6mm thick, and 44.5mm lug-to-lug. Domed sapphire crystals front and back with double-sided anti-reflective coating. The Odyssey is water-resistant to 300m – 300m less than the Bluefin and Uni, because MING retained the existing external case dimensions and had to make space for the slightly thicker GMT movement internally, by reducing the thickness of the crystal and case back.

Sellita for MING SW330.M2 movement

The Sellita for MING SW330.M2 movement features a skeletonized mainplate, bridges, and rotor in an anthracite finish. Automatic winding, stop-seconds, power reserve of approximately 50 hours. This is a so-called caller GMT: the GMT hand jumps in hourly increments when the crown at 4 o'clock is pulled out, while the minute hand remains stationary. The movement is approximately 0.5 mm thicker than the SW300 in the Bluefin and Uni models.

About the brand

MING was founded in 2014 at an altitude of ten thousand meters – aboard a plane heading home from a watch fair. Six frustrated collectors, including Ming Thein, agreed that the watch market had grown old and lacked a sense of discovery. From this agreement emerged the brand, now led by Ming Thein – a photographer, designer, business strategist, and, above all, a passionate watch collector. Together with the founding team, he draws on over eighty years of collective collecting experience, ranging from vintage classics to avant-garde experiments.

Ming Thein grew up in Kuala Lumpur and studied theoretical physics at Balliol College, Oxford, at just sixteen years old. Before dedicating himself full-time to professional watch photography for leading Swiss brands, he held several senior management positions. MING does not manufacture watches in its own factory in the traditional sense, but collaborates with a selected group of Swiss suppliers who handle component production, assembly, regulation, and testing. The finished pieces are then sent to Malaysia for final quality control.

Manufacturing and assembly take place in Switzerland, while design, engineering, and final quality control occur in Malaysia. The brand's watchmaking partners include Agenhor, La Joux-Perret, and Sellita, as well as specialists outside the industry such as Helfenstein Mechanik and Degrees of Freedom.

This unusual combination of aesthetics and technical craftsmanship has brought the brand numerous awards, including the Horological Revelation Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève 2019 and the Sports Watch Prize at GPHG 2024. For a brand without centuries of tradition behind it, this is a remarkable achievement and clear proof that even in the world of independent watches, there is still room for a different way of thinking.
