Louis Erard x Vianney Halter Futur Antérieur Gold
What would a watch from the future look like if someone had designed it more than a century ago? Louis Erard and legendary independent watchmaker Vianney Halter offer a fascinating answer.
The Futur Antérieur Gold is an exceptional encounter between Swiss watchmaking tradition and the unmistakable vision of Vianney Halter, one of the most distinctive figures in independent haute horlogerie. The watch’s design is based on his iconic Antiqua model and combines retrofuturistic aesthetics, industrial details and an unusual mechanical construction.
The watch is distinguished by two separate dials reminiscent of the portholes of a historic machine or submarine. The lower one displays the hours and minutes, while the upper one is dedicated to the seconds hand. Both feature a yellow-gilt finish with a finely grained texture, an applied outer ring with a circular-brushed finish and characteristic blued-steel hands. The raised bezels are adorned with a total of 24 polished yellow-gilt rivets, one of Vianney Halter’s most distinctive signatures.
The case construction is equally exceptional. It is assembled from 67 individual components, combining circular- and vertically brushed surfaces with polished edges, and is complemented by two distinctive crowns. Each is adorned with a further six yellow-gilt rivets. Despite its complex construction, the stainless-steel case measures just 38 × 44 mm and is 8.85 mm thick. The two separate sapphire portholes feature anti-reflective treatment on both sides, and the watch is water-resistant to 5 ATM.
The greatest technical surprise, however, lies inside. The Futur Antérieur is powered by two independent Sellita SW100 automatic movements. One drives the hour and minute hands, while the other is dedicated exclusively to the seconds display. Each movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, features 25 jewels and offers a power reserve of at least 38 hours. This unusual solution separates the indications into two truly independent mechanisms, rather than simply creating the appearance of two displays on a single dial.
The watch is complemented by a black ostrich leather strap, creating an elegant contrast with the yellow-gilt dials and blued hands.
The Futur Antérieur Gold is limited to just 178 pieces. It offers a unique opportunity to own a watch bearing Vianney Halter’s authentic design signature, paired with a truly original mechanical solution.

About Vianney Halter
Vianney Halter was born in 1963 on the outskirts of Paris, the son of a train driver for the French railways. Even as a child, he was fascinated by the old machines and mechanical devices his father brought home. Perhaps this early exposure to powerful locomotives, steam engines and other measuring instruments is what sparked his interest in technology and mechanics.
At the age of fourteen, Vianney Halter decided to pursue his interest in mechanics and moved to Paris, where he enrolled at the École Horlogère de Paris (Paris Watchmaking School). He graduated in 1980 and spent the first ten years of his career restoring antique watches and clocks, gaining an in-depth knowledge of the art of watchmaking.
Since 1984, he has worked as an independent watchmaker and began creating timepieces for renowned brands such as Harry Winston, Breguet and Audemars Piguet. Since 1998, he has also designed and developed his own collection of wristwatches. His designs are considered avant-garde and are regarded as having ushered in a new direction in watchmaking. Vianney Halter creates unusual watches using the traditional methods of master watchmakers of the past, while drawing on his unique aesthetic, his own technical patents and distinctive constructions.
All this is exemplified by his first model, “Antiqua”, a perpetual calendar introduced in 1998. It was immediately hailed as a “relic of the future”, a reception that reinforced Halter’s creativity and enabled him to join the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI).
His years as an independent watchmaker and his contribution to modern watchmaking have already earned him nine prestigious awards. He has created around ten wristwatch models, but their demanding production process means that production figures are kept secret. To date, fewer than 500 Vianney Halter watches have been made.
The quality of his expertise has also earned him a place among the figures profiled in the official “White Book” (Livre Blanc) of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, which aims to define the boundaries of the exclusive world of technical and precious precision watchmaking.
Vianney Halter works as an artist, expressing his creativity and style through the skills he has mastered—the skills that belong to the art of watch construction.
