LIP Himalaya 40 – Sector Dial

The name Himalaya is not accidental for LIP. In 1950, Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal reached the summit of Annapurna and became the first people in human history to cross the 8,000-meter mark. They were French and they kept track of time on the summit using the LIP Himalaya watch. Five years later, Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy conquered Makalu. Two world records, one watch model.

Today's Himalaya 40 carries this legacy consciously and without ostentation. The polished and brushed 316L steel case with a diameter of 40 mm is fitted with a smooth dark blue leather strap with tonal stitching and a chrome buckle with the LIP logo. The silver-white dial bears Arabic numerals and a small seconds subdisplay at 6 o'clock. The long blue hands ensure excellent readability and are protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

The dial is designed as a sector dial, where the surface is divided into concentric zones with different finishes, inspired by aircraft instrument panels and geometric patterns of navigation instruments. It is an aesthetic that was born in the thirties and has never ceased to be relevant.

The watch is equipped with a reliable quartz movement and a screw-down back cover, water resistance reaches 50 meters. Designed and manufactured in Besançon - the capital of French watchmaking.

LIP legend from France

LIP is a well-known French brand that has been producing quality watches for over 150 years. The company was founded in 1867 by Emmanuel Lipmann in Besançon, France. Initially, the brand focused on the production of pocket watches, but with the development of technology, it also began to produce wristwatches. Over the years, Lip has designed and manufactured approximately 40 different movements for pocket and wristwatches.

LIP watches are known for their elegant and timeless design, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. The brand collaborated with renowned designers and artists such as André Donat (designer of the T18) and Roger Tallon (designer of the Mach 2000).

One of the most iconic LIP watches is the "Baignoire" model, designed in 1925 by the company's founder. This watch has a rectangular case and a unique crown position at 12 o'clock. It has been worn by famous figures such as Pablo Picasso and Marilyn Monroe.

An indelible mark on the watchmaking world

Among watch collectors, the watches launched in the 1950s and late 1960s are probably the most sought-after. At that time, LIP helped the then virtually unknown Blancpain brand with the marketing and sale of its waterproof watches. Models from this period bear not the Blancpain logo on the dial, but the LIP logo. Moreover, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms series were originally powered by the Lip R23 movement.

LIP watches also made history by being the first brand to introduce an electric watch in 1952. The watch worn by Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in space in 1961 was powered by a licensed LIP movement.
