Jaeger & Benzinger – Edition 6 Vintage Movement - Grey Moire DLC

There is a category of watches where each piece is not counted as a number in a limited edition, but as a handmade item on which hours of a specific person's work are visible. The Jaeger & Benzinger Edition 6 Moiré Arabic Black Case fully belongs to this category.

The dial with a hand-crafted guilloché with a moiré pattern – an optical phenomenon created by overlapping two regular grids, which creates a vibrant, undulating surface. No machine can reproduce this pattern perfectly twice; each dial bears the mark of the engraver's hand. The italicized Arabic numerals are inspired by the typography of historical German watchmaking books – a detail that gives the model a conscious historical context.

The black PVD case (38 mm, only 8 mm thick) is a deliberate choice: it contrasts with the guilloché dial and gives the whole a look of dark elegance. Hand-polished Breguet hands with blue flame-blued tips complete the visual unity.

The sapphire crystal case back reveals what Jaeger & Benzinger insists on as much as the dial: a hand-engraved movement. The bridges and plates are individually decorated – Côtes de Genève, perlage, hand-beveled edges. All this to an extent that is reserved for watches in the tens of thousands of euros in Swiss manufactures.

Jochen Benzinger is one of the last active masters of hand guilloché engraving in the German-speaking world. Guilloché – engraving fine geometric patterns onto a metal surface using a rose engine or other specialized machine – is a skill that has been passed down through direct apprenticeship for centuries and is now mastered by only a handful of people worldwide. Benzinger has been dedicated to it for over thirty years, and his work is so recognized that his is one of the few workshops outside of Breguet allowed to use the designation "Breguet frosted dial" for its characteristic frosted dial surface.

His business partner is Kay Jaeger – a watch collector and consultant with over thirty years of experience, founder of the alternative watch fair Manufakturmesse in Mannheim. Together they form a brand that works exclusively to order: each watch is assembled for a specific customer, accompanied by a handwritten warranty certificate and personal correspondence. This is not marketing – it is a way of working that has no other option.
