Custom font
Felix-Font is a custom font family created specifically for the independent watch manufacturer Habring². It was originally developed as an extended set of numerals, designed based on the existing 12 numerals used on Habring²'s Felix watches. A set of solid outline numerals was further designed to enhance the gilded applications found on the Erwin and Doppel-Felix models.
The next step was to create a set of numerals in two versions - semi-condensed and standard width - for date display and sub-dials. This varying width was necessary for radial date display (as shown in the final image) to allow numerals from 20 to 31 to fit on the dial without distortion. In addition, a set of capital letters was created, allowing Felix-Font to be used for all dial indications. These applications include chronograph scales such as tachymeter, telemeter or pulsometer, as well as calendar displays for months and days. The letters have a semi-condensed design derived from traditional watchmaking typography, featuring elements such as a "flat-top A", an optically monolinear construction, and similar character widths.
Felix-Font also includes wide ink traps and ink catchers, allowing for cleaner printing at small sizes common on watch dials. The project's goal was to provide Habring² with a custom-tailored font to replace their older typefaces. The Felix-Font family maintains a neutral aesthetic that complements other Habring² watches, while drawing inspiration from mid-20th-century horological typography.
Who is behind Habring²
Mechanical watches made with love by ecological farmers of independent watchmaking, as brand founders Maria and Richard Habring call themselves. The brand's main specialisation is offering fascinating complications at very attractive prices. With an annual production of 200 watches per year, manufactured by a small team of watchmakers in Austria, Habring² can be considered without exaggeration the smallest true "manufactory".
Richard and Maria founded Habring² in 2004 and shortly thereafter developed their own in-house movements. They have won the prestigious Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève four times!
