The Awake Son Mài Frosted Leaf Royal Blue is an extraordinary fusion of traditional artistry and contemporary Swiss watchmaking. Its most striking feature is the handcrafted dial, which combines deep shades of blue, delicate golden glimmers, and a fascinating three-dimensional texture. Every piece is entirely unique, its final appearance shaped by the painstaking process of layering, sanding, and polishing natural materials.
At its heart is Sơn Mài, a traditional Vietnamese lacquer technique dating back hundreds of years. Master artisans gradually apply layers of natural lacquer, derived from the sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree, combining them with natural blue pigments and flakes of pure 24-karat gold. The special Frosted Leaf technique involves repeatedly placing gold leaf between layers of lacquer, which are then sanded by hand. Gradually, organic patterns emerge, evoking landscapes, water, or the golden veining of natural minerals. Making a single dial takes approximately 15 hours, and no two are exactly alike.
The original design of the hands and applied indices, featuring Super-LumiNova BGW9 luminescence, also deserves attention. They combine luminous material with metal overlays featuring polished, brushed, and engraved finishes. In the dark, they create a subtle glow that accentuates the depth of the lacquered dial without detracting from its elegant appearance.
The 316L stainless steel case measures 38 mm in diameter, 44.75 mm lug-to-lug, and 11.5 mm thick, including the slightly domed sapphire crystal. The combination of a polished bezel, brushed sides, and subtly stepped lugs evokes the classic watchmaking aesthetics of the 1960s. Water resistance is 10 ATM (100 metres).
Power comes from the high-quality Swiss La Joux-Perret G101 automatic calibre, with a power reserve of 68 hours. Its construction can be admired through the transparent sapphire caseback, which also reveals a specially designed tungsten rotor with polished, brushed, and microblasted surfaces.
The watch is completed by a luxurious blue Alcantara strap, handcrafted by the French manufacture Jean Rousseau. It features a lining of rubberised calfskin and a new Fitwell M1 pin buckle, which allows fine length adjustment in 3 mm increments.
The Awake Son Mài Frosted Leaf Royal Blue is limited to just 200 pieces. The combination of a hand-lacquered dial with pure gold, a Swiss mechanical movement, and refined details creates a watch whose greatest value lies not only in its technical specifications, but above all in the human effort, patience, and craftsmanship embodied in every individual dial.
