There's a question that has puzzled the watchmaking world for over a century: what exactly is luxury? Is it the material? The craftsmanship? The story? Atelier Wen answers it in its own way, by combining French design thinking with Chinese craftsmanship traditions millennia old. Perception V3 is the most complete expression of this intention to date.
Dial: guilloché by the hand of the first Chinese master
Central to the watch is the guilloché dial in the écailles de poisson, or "fish scale," pattern, hand-engraved in the workshop of Cheng Yucai, China's first certified master guilloché engraver. Each dial is created over hours of uninterrupted work on a self-designed rose-engine lathe. A single mistake means starting over.
Guilloché as a technique survives in a handful of places around the world. Most manufacturers have switched to CNC and stamping. Engine turning requires a human hand, feel, and years of practice that cannot be learned from an instruction manual alone. This is precisely where the craft is preserved.
The four-part dial construction is based on the principle of sǔn mǎo, a Chinese carpentry technique of joining without nails or glue. The indices are set into the guilloché base without visible fasteners, above which sits a minute ring with a Chinese huiwen pattern printed with Super-LumiNova X1. Applied indices are rhodium-plated. The dial is not held together by glue. It holds itself.
Movement EPM03: a French heart with a Chinese soul
For the V3 version, Atelier Wen used a movement from the French manufacture Pequignet, based in Morteau, for the first time. It is one of the last truly independent movement manufacturers in France, designing, developing, and assembling its calibers entirely in-house.
The EPM03 caliber achieves chronometric grade accuracy (−4/+6 s/day, averaging ±2 s/day), is regulated in six positions and three temperatures, boasts a 65-hour power reserve, and a stop-seconds function—a first in Perception history. The bidirectional Pellaton-style winding mechanism with a patented tooth profile reduces wear and increases winding efficiency. The bridges are shaped into a traditional Chinese wind symbol and filled with polished dark blue aventurine lacquer, which evokes a night sky in light. Surfaces feature wavy Côtes de Genève, black polished screws, anglage, perlage, and a snail-finished and frosted rotor.
904L Steel Case
904L steel is a material not often seen in the world of independent watches. It is a so-called super-austenitic alloy with a higher proportion of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, which polishes to an exceptionally deep, almost liquid luster and resists corrosion better than standard 316L. Every edge of the case is intentionally crafted: brushed surfaces contrast with polished bevels, the upper part of the lugs referencing the subtle slopes of historical roof structures.
The Yún variant now comes with a micro-matte surface and polished bevels, a contemporary matte character that contrasts with the brushed and polished finish of the Piāo and Xiá variants. Case diameter 40 mm, lug-to-lug length 47 mm, thickness 10.4 mm. A transparent sapphire crystal case back with 10 layers of anti-reflective coating offers a view of the entire movement. Water resistance 100 m.
Bracelet with patented clasp
The integrated bracelet made of the same 904L steel tapers from 22 mm at the case to 18 mm at the clasp, gradually thinning from 3 mm to 2.6 mm. Asymmetrical hexagonal links reference the roofs and windows of traditional Chinese architecture. The clasp with patented on-the-fly micro-adjustment allows the length to be fine-tuned without removing the watch – a button hidden under the Atelier Wen logo on the clasp releases the mechanism for seamless adjustment. A telescopic deployant blade keeps the clasp slim while allowing easy donning over the hand. Quick-release spring bars ensure easy exchange for an FKM rubber strap.
Three Variants
Yún 筠 denotes bamboo green – a new addition to the collection, with a micro-matte case finish. Piāo 缥 is ice blue, Xiá 霞 is salmon. All variants share identical dimensions, movement, and construction; they differ in dial color and case and bracelet finish.
