Arcange AS05 Lacquered Black: A Symphony of Textures and a Modern Interpretation of the Sector Dial
The Arcange AS05 Lacquered Black model represents a pinnacle example of how classic 1940s dress watches can be interpreted with boldness and a modern flair. This model is not just a mere re-edition of history, but a fascinating exercise in depth and three-dimensionality. At the heart of the watch is a unique three-layer dial, combining several traditional watchmaking techniques into one harmonious whole. The central part consists of a deep black high-gloss lacquer, which acts like an endless water surface. This center is surrounded by a sophisticated anthracite hour ring, which creates a subtle but clearly defined contrast to the outer minute track adorned with precise guilloché. It is the guilloché pattern on the edge of the dial that gives the watch dynamism and changing reflections with every movement of the wrist.
The visual depth of the entire concept is underscored by hand-applied indices that rise above the surface, lending the dial the necessary plasticity. These three-dimensional elements are complemented by highly polished Alpha-type hands, whose sharp edges brilliantly reflect light and ensure perfect legibility even in challenging lighting conditions. This entire watchmaking composition is protected by a double-domed sapphire crystal with five layers of internal anti-reflective coating, which eliminates unwanted glare and highlights the details of both the lacquer and the guilloché.
Despite its visual complexity, the AS05 model maintains an admirably slim profile. The 316L stainless steel case, with a diameter of 37.2 mm, achieves an overall thickness of only 9.5 mm, making it an ideal accessory under a shirt cuff. Inside beats the reliable Japanese automatic Miyota 9039 caliber from the premium Slim series, which, thanks to the absence of a date display, offers a clean design and symmetry without compromise. A surprising feature in this category of elegant watches is the 100-meter water resistance, which, combined with a premium leather strap from French tanneries, makes the Arcange AS05 a versatile companion for any occasion.
The AS05 model features a 37.2 mm diameter case with a lug-to-lug dimension of 46 mm and a thickness of 9.5 mm including the crystal. It is made of 316L stainless steel, combining sandblasted surfaces with polished edges, and is fitted with a Miyota 9039 automatic movement with a frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour. The dial, with a lacquered center, anthracite ring, and guilloché edge, is complemented by hand-applied indices, while water resistance is guaranteed to a depth of 100 meters.

About the brand
Arcange is an independent French watchmaking brand, whose inception is linked to a personal discovery by its founder. As a child, he discovered his grandfather's watch from 1969, and this moment became the impetus for a lasting interest in the mechanics and aesthetics of classic watches. Arcange designs therefore often feature elements inspired by vintage models, as well as the instrumental appearance of aircraft instruments.
The watches are finally assembled and controlled in Besançon, the traditional center of French watchmaking, and are complemented by leather straps also made in France.
From a technical perspective, Arcange primarily uses Miyota 9 Series mechanical automatic movements, with some models featuring rotor decoration or a transparent case back. The brand is also characterized by so-called sector dials, restrained color schemes, and a clean layout of elements, which refer to the French tradition of functional and clear design. Cases are generally steel, often with brushed surfaces and polished details that emphasize simple geometric shapes.
Arcange offers a glimpse into contemporary independent watchmaking that builds on French tradition, works with technical details, and at the same time maintains its own, restrained design language.
